Arran Aromatics Driftwood Shaving Cream

Another product of Scotland.

Used with: Belzano Superinox (1st shave)

I scooped out a small amount of cream and worked it with my badger brush. I had to use a bit of water to help thin it out and it still clogged my razor on the first pass. No problems producing plenty of lather for my usual routine. Slickness was very good. I picked up a nick on my neck during the first pass but it sealed itself quickly. My neck was generally good but I had some roughness on one side, and along my jawline, and it was left a bit raw. WTG my face was smooth. ATG there were several areas with a fair bit of resistance. Nowhere made it to BBS. Post shave feel was okay, not especially soft or smooth and quite dry. The fragrance was a plus point, it was strong enough to stay with me throughout. It’s a very fresh, energetic scent. A pretty good shave.

Used with: Rapira Super Stainless (2nd shave)

I used my boar brush to work a small amount of cream that I had smeared into my stubble. I probably should have used a bit more as it was an effort to work up the second pass and I didn’t have much for touch-ups. Slickness was good though, so I got away with some water for the final stages. I didn’t pick up any nicks. My neck was good, nice and close except along my jawline and an area off to one side (my usual trouble spots). No problems WTG on my face. I had a few areas of roughness ATG though, likely down to not being able to complete my usual routine. Nowhere made it to BBS. Post shave feel was soft but a bit dry. I got the fragrance throughout. It’s a fresh scent, but not sure it’s a favourite. A pretty good shave.

Used with: Super-Max Stainless (3rd shave)

I scooped out a better amount this time before loading with my badger brush. I had to add a little water for the first pass. Slickness was excellent and I didn’t pick up any nicks. My neck wasn’t perfect but was generally very close, the only problem areas were my usual trouble-spots. WTG was nice and smooth on my face. ATG was good in places, but I did have some areas of resistance, largely on one cheek. Nowhere made it to BBS. Post shave feel was soft but a bit dry. The fresh fragrance was strong enough to stay with me throughout. It’s nice enough but isn’t one of my favourites. A good shave.

Used with: Personna Platinum Chrome (4th shave)

I didn’t use much, scooping it out with my little finger before working with my badger brush. I had to add a little water to get the right consistency but was rewarded with plenty of lather for my usual routine. Slickness felt very good but I did pick up a handful of small nicks. They sealed themselves before I finished. My neck was pretty good, nice and close except for a couple of trouble-spots. WTG my face was awesomely smooth. ATG wasn’t bad, but nowhere quite made it to BBS. Post shave was pleasant but a touch dry. The fragrance was strong once again and stayed with me. Not as nice as their Bay Citrus for me but still nice. A very good shave.

Used with: Lord Super Stainless (1st shave)

I applied a small amount of cream to my stubble before working it with my badger brush. A little water was all I needed to produce plenty of lather. Slickness wasn’t bad to start with but got a little ‘sticky’ towards the end. I didn’t pick up any nicks though. My neck wasn’t bad but one of my usual trouble spots was particularly bad. It also felt raw. Some very slight roughness WTG on my chin, but the rest of my face was good. There was plenty of resistance ATG and nowhere was in the same realm as BBS. Post shave feel was pleasant. I remember getting a whiff of the fragrance at the start but it disappeared into the background and I don’t remember it after that. A pretty good shave.

Verdict

The company appears to have been renamed simply Arran and the Driftwood range may have morphed into Machrie. It looks like the ingredients have changed though, so may not be the same stuff (only available in a tube now).

A bit like the previous Bay Citrus cream I tried, the strength is in the fragrance, which is both strong and distinctive. It was bright and fresh, though I’m not sure it ranks among my favourites.

Aside from that, I struggled to get really good shaves using this. Although I did get at least one very good shave.

Slickness was generally excellent, but that didn’t always come through in the end result. Post shave feel was underwhelming at times too.

A solid performer but not a gem based on my experience.
