Arran Aromatics Driftwood Shaving Soap

Another from the Scottish contingent, will this live up to the cream?

Used with: Gillette 7 O’Clock Super Stainless (2nd shave)

I soaked the puck alongside my badger brush, before loading for thirty seconds. Lather didn’t explode off it, but I was able to build enough for my usual routine. I did have to work a bit on the second pass, adding some water. Slickness, certainly after the first two passes, was relatively poor, but I didn’t pick up any nicks. I put a little extra work into my neck and it paid off as it wasn’t as patchy as usual, though still not perfect. My jawline was pretty good though. Above that was generally smooth, if not quite BBS. I had the odd patch, especially around my mouth. Post shave feel was good. The fragrance is very subtle, quite light and refreshing. Not sure about it yet, or how it compares to the Citrus Bay Rum. A very good shave.

Used with: Super-Max Stainless (3rd shave)

As before, I bloomed the puck and loaded with my badger. Again, lather didn’t explode off it, but I had enough for my usual 2+ passes. It seemed very airy, especially to start with. Slickness wasn’t great. Even with wet hands, washing the suds off between passes I found they ‘stuck’ like when using a hand soap. Having said that, I didn’t pick up any nicks. My neck had a few patches, a few more than normal, but my jawline was good. Above that was nice and smooth. It wasn’t BBS ATG and I had the odd stray hair around my mouth, but the rest was good. Nice and soft too. I had to hunt for the scent again. Still not sure about it. On the plus side, it won’t interfere with any aftershave and doesn’t linger. A good shave.

Used with: Rapira Platinum Lux (1st shave)

I loaded a little longer with my badger brush after blooming the puck. I had enough but I did have to work it for the second pass. As I went on, it seemed less dense and substantial. Slickness was better but I picked up a few nicks. The finish on my neck had fewer patches than usual and my jawline was pretty good too. Above that was generally very good, though not quite BBS. I had the odd patch too. Post shave wasn’t bad, just not as good as some. I caught a whiff of the fragrance while lathering, though it took some hunting. Not my favourite. A pretty good shave all in all, with just a few negatives to take away from a great shave.

Used with: Derby Extra (4th shave)

I loaded for thirty second using my badger brush after blooming the puck. This was another shave where I opted for the warm towel during my prep. No problems producing the lather, although I needed to work with a bit of water for the second pass. Slickness felt fine, but I did pick up quite a few nicks and some irritation on my top lip. To be fair, some of that might have been down to the fact that I shaved much later in the day than usual, plus the age of the blade. My neck was pretty good, though I had the odd patch, same with my jaw. Above that was glorious, with only a stray hair or two at the corners of my mouth to disturb it. A few areas made it to BBS ATG. Post shave feel wasn’t bad either. I can’t say I noticed the fragrance at all during the shave. Aside from the irritation it was a top notch shave.

Used with: Shark Super Chrome (3rd shave)

I loaded my badger brush for forty seconds after soaking the puck. The lather was easy to build up, but I needed a drop more water and some work for the second pass. Slickness wasn’t great, but I didn’t pick up any nicks despite the blade tugging a bit. The finish on my neck was a little patchy, my jawline too. My face was pretty good apart from a few places around my mouth. Nowhere made it to BBS. Post shave feel wasn’t bad, but wasn’t up with the best. Again, the shave may as well have been fragrance free for all that I picked up. Still a pretty good shave.

If you’re a fan of strong fragrances, this isn’t the soap for you. It was so subtle as to be non-existent, even when I had my nose pressed against it. The fragrance reminded me a bit of the Scottish Fine Soaps one, a little powdery. It’s hard to knock the make up of the scent as I doubt I got a good representation. Other than that, performance wasn’t bad. It lathered okay, slickness was okay and I got some reasonable shaves. Nothing to propel it into the premier league though. Price is pretty good (I had the refill), so you’re not breaking the bank to try it. A solid, if unexceptional, performer.
