One of the few creams that use pine for fragrance.
Used with: Gillette Wilkinson Sword (2nd shave)
I squeezed a decent amount of cream onto my synthetic brush and began to lather up. I was immediately disappointed by the lack of lather and added a bunch more cream. With the additional cream I was able to eke out enough for my usual routine, but the quality wasn’t great. I get the impression this is better as a brushless cream. Slickness was good though, and I didn’t pick up any nicks. The finish on my neck was okay. Roughness was limited to the usual trouble-spots and the rest was reasonable. No problems WTG on my face but ATG there was lots of resistance, bordering on roughness in a few places. Post shave feel was soft but dry. Also claiming to be pine-scented, I didn’t register any fragrance before or during the shave. A pretty good shave.
Used with: Rapira Platinum Lux (4th shave)
Remembering the previous shave I started with a lot more cream this time. I still struggled to get any form of lather, it was more just coating my face with the cream. I had about enough for my usual routine though. Slickness felt okay and I only picked up a single nick, which was sealed by cold water. Nowhere on my neck felt especially close but the only real roughness was limited to my usual trouble-spots. WTG my face felt fine. There was plenty of resistance ATG but no real roughness. Post shave feel was soft but very dry. I don’t recall a fragrance of any sort. An average shave.
Used with: Personna Q-Ball Platinum Plus (3rd shave)
I decided to treat it like a brushless cream for this shave, so slathered it over my stubble after some water, repeating with whatever was left in my hand for subsequent passes. Slickness was good and I only picked up a couple of tiny nicks. My neck was very good, with no rough patches besides the usual trouble-spots. No problems WTG on my face. ATG was good too, with only mild resistance. No rough patches but nowhere got close to BBS either. Post shave feel was soft but dry. I didn’t pick up a fragrance of any sort. A good shave though.
Used with: Gillette Wilkinson Sword (1st shave)
Although it’s a big bottle, bear in mind you need to use a lot of cream compared to the others I have used, even though I again went the brushless route. Slickness, when water is applied, felt pretty good, although it didn’t stop me picking up a few nicks. They were sealed by cold water. I also had some irritation on my top lip. The finish on my neck was very average. Normally, WTG on my face is completely smooth, but not so with this. While not rough, there was plenty of resistance ATG. Post shave feel was okay. No sign of a scent during the shave. Holding the bottle up to my nose, I’d be hard-pressed to describe the subtle fragrance as pine. A very average shave.
Used with: The Bluebeards Revenge Blades (4th shave)
I opted for brushless again, using a large amount of cream. This resulted in lots of clogging, so I may have gone too far the other way. Slickness, when water was added, was good once again. It wasn’t enough to stop me picking up a ton of nicks though. Some real weepers as well. They were all sealed after application of cold water. No irritation though. My neck felt pretty good. Not especially close but the only roughness was limited to my usual trouble-spots. WTG my face felt nice. ATG there was plenty of resistance, bordering on roughness in some places. I don’t recall a fragrance at all during the shave. A good shave though.
I’d not heard of this before I tried it, it was brought back as a gift from someone visiting the US.
Although the instructions state you can use a brush, I found this didn’t lather at all and was best to treat it as a brushless cream. In the same vein as Cremo.
Regardless of the method, I found I had to use a lot more cream than with any other product I have tried. Water had very little effect, aside from making it slick, which was likely down to the glycerin.
The pine and cedar scent was a bust too. Not something you could pick up as any fragrance was so subtle, and what I could detect didn’t strike me as pine.
I got pretty basic finishes with this, no outstanding shaves and a few that were barely adequate.
There are far better brushless creams, and a multitude that’ll outperform it when you use a brush, at every price point. Not one to recommend, at any price.
