Boots Cool Cologne Lather Shave Cream

Another of Boots’ shaving products, this time a cream with an appealing name.

Used with: Gillette 7 O’clock SharpEdge (2nd shave)

I did just about notice a cooling effect as I applied the lather for each of my passes, but certainly not as strong as the Menthol Proraso. Similarly, the smell was so subtle it was hard to pick up, but what I could wasn’t unpleasant. I face lathered and it took a bit longer to get to the right consistency than I thought, it also took a bit more water than I was expecting, based on some of the comments/reviews I’d read. The shave wasn’t too bad, no nicks, and reasonably smooth across most of my face, but there were plenty of rough patches, despite going over them a few times. It also didn’t leave the slick layer that some did. Overall, it was still a fairly good shave though.

Used with: Rapira Super Stainless (1st shave)

Again, the cooling effect was marginal, more noticeable on the second application actually. I didn’t get a good lather, and not much of it either. I had to apply more product before lathering for my second pass, the first time that’s ever happened. I picked up a couple of nicks, one weeper and ended up with an averagely smooth shave. That was after touching up as well. The cream did leave a reasonably slick finish this time though.

Used with: Rapira Super Stainless (red & blue) (1st shave)

I face lathered but it didn’t seem to produce much in the way of thickness. I added water a couple of times to try and increase the volume, but no go. What remained for the second pass was closer to slurry. I added a good amount more product and plam lathered it, but it didn’t seem to want to go. The blade seemed to tug through most of the shave, at least compared to some, but I didn’t get any nicks or irritation and the end result was pretty good. I didn’t pick up any scent from it, likewise with the cooling effect.

Used with: Schick Premium (2nd shave)

Face lathering again, I found it to be a bit stodgy, despite dipping my brush into some water a couple of times. I didn’t think there was going to be enough for a second pass either, but a bit of work generated enough (wouldn’t have made three though). I didn’t notice any cooling effect, but it did leave me with a good level of slickness after each pass. The shave was smooth, but I picked up a lot of nicks. After a bit of touching up, the end result was good though, not quite perfect ATG, but very close.

Used with: Personna Platinum Chrome Super Stainless (4th shave)

Despite using the normal amount for any other tube, I struggled to get a reasonable amount of lather. I thought it was a bit dry, but adding some water didn’t help, and neither did working it longer. The second coating was barely that, and semi-transparent. Slickness after each pass was average at best. Despite that, the shave felt okay, but I did pick up a lot of nicks and some irritation. The end result wasn’t good either.

For the price, I shouldn’t have been expecting too much, and it’s unlikely this would make it into anyone’s regular rotation. I found it inconsistent to generate a decent lather, and not much slickness either. It also seems to miss both the cool and cologne aspects of its name.
