Derby Shaving Soap

A workman-like soap from this Turkish manufacturer.

Used with: Personna Q-Ball (2nd shave)

I left it dry in the tub, then loaded for thirty seconds using a shaken out synthetic brush. No problem getting plenty of suds, or converting it into a ton of lather. Slickness felt good but I picked up a few nicks, not sure these were the fault of the soap though (previous shaves had meant my face was sensitive). My neck was very good, with the only hint of roughness in my usual trouble-spots. I could feel a little coarseness WTG on my chin, but the rest of my face was good. ATG there was plenty of resistance but no actual roughness. Post shave feel was soft but dry. It has, to my nose, the same smell as Arko. When I opened the tub it was potent. It’s not a fragrance I enjoy. It settled down during the shave though. A good, nearly very good, shave.

Used with: Kai Stainless (1st shave)

I again left it dry, but loaded with my boar brush. I didn’t think I was going to have enough but a quick dip of the bristles made it flourish. Slickness felt okay. I picked up a few nicks, though mostly this was just reopening existing wounds. My neck felt pretty good, with the only roughness in my usual trouble-spots. WTG my face felt very smooth. ATG there was some resistance but no roughness. Nowhere made it to BBS. Post shave feel was soft but dry. The distinctive fragrance was present but only if I paid attention. A good, but not quite very good, shave.

Used with: Gillette 7 O’clock Super Platinum (3rd shave)

I lathered up with my synthetic brush. Thirty seconds on the dry soap was enough to generate plenty of suds. Slickness felt good and I didn’t pick up any nicks. Aside from some roughness in the usual trouble-spots, my neck was very good, both smooth and soft. It was a similar story WTG on my face. ATG there was some resistance, and one patch that bordered on roughness. Nowhere made it to BBS. Post shave feel was soft but a little dry. The fragrance hit me as soon as I removed the lid and was strong as I loaded up, but it disappeared into the background during the shave. A very good shave.

Used with: Super-Max Stainless (4th shave)

I used a different razor for this shave, my Gillette Slim Adjustable, on setting six. Loading with my badger brush resulted in plenty of lather. It was easy to generate a good coating. Slickness felt okay. I did pick up a few weepers, but that was due to opening previous nicks and/catching lumps. I also had some irritation on my top lip. My neck wasn’t bad, but didn’t feel especially close and I had roughness in my usual trouble-spots. WTG my face felt smooth. ATG felt good too, with no rough patches and minimal resistance. There were a couple of spots on my chin that went close to BBS. Post shave feel was soft but dry. I got a whiff of the fragrance at the start, but don’t recall it after that. A good shave.

Used with: Gillette Silver Blue (3rd shave)

Back to my trusty Edwin Jagger and synthetic brush. I shook it out and loaded from a dry puck. It takes a few seconds to get going but once it does you get plenty of suds. Lather was both thick and plentiful. It offered reasonable protection too, with the only nicks the result of existing wounds being re-opened. Aside from my usual trouble-spots, my neck was very good. WTG my face was nice and smooth. ATG was good too, with some minimal resistance but no roughness. Nowhere quite made it to BBS. Post shave feel was soft but a little dry. I did pick up the distinctive fragrance at the start, but it fades into the background so it’s no an issue. A very good shave.

Verdict

The packaging is… basic, at best. I was slightly concerned about getting the cardboard bowl wet, and it discouraged me from washing off the leftover suds too vigourously.

The fragrance is definitely an acquired taste. To me it’s basically the same as Arko. This is very potent when new, but becomes more subtle over time and in use I barely noticed it. Just be prepared for it to stink out the bathroom to start with.

Performance-wise, it was better than average but not quite great. I got good shaves, but rarely great ones. Protection was a little below the best, but adequate.

Post shave feel was pretty good, but again, unremarkable.

That is probably the best way to describe this. It gets the job done without standing out. The one place it does shine is price though — you get a lot of bang for your buck.

I’d say the soap was similar to my experience with their blades: there’s nothing wrong with it, but it won’t blow your hair back either.
