Edwin Jagger Natural Aloe Vera Shaving Soap

Another soap from the Sheffield-based British brand.

Used with: Feather Hi-Stainless (1st shave)

I dipped the puck into the sink before loading for thirty seconds with my badger brush. I had a good crop of suds but when I started to build the lather on my face I found I needed to add a fair bit of water. After that I found I didn’t have a huge amount overall. Slickness seemed okay but it didn’t prevent me picking up a handful of nicks. Most were sealed by the time I finished, or cold water, but some survived. I also had some irritation on my top lip. My neck was largely fine, but the finish was a little patchy, with a few bits of roughness along with the usual problem areas. WTG my face wasn’t entirely smooth either. ATG there was plenty of resistance, even roughness. Even on my cheeks. Post shave feel was average. I was able to pick up the fragrance, despite it being subtle, several times during the shave. Pleasant enough. An average shave.

Used with: Personna Med Prep (3rd shave)

I soaked the puck alongside my boar brush and then loaded for thirty seconds. It didn’t throw off much proto-lather and I wasn’t sure I had enough, but a bit of water made it flourish. Slickness felt pretty good but it didn’t prevent me picking up a lot of small nicks. They were all sealed by the time I washed up. I also had some irritation on my top lip. My neck was good aside from the usual problem areas, which were a little rough. WTG my face was smooth. ATG there was some resistance, as well as some actual roughness. Nowhere got close to BBS. Post shave feel was very dry. I didn’t pick up the fragrance at any point. A pretty good shave.

Used with: Gillette Stainless (2nd shave)

I dunked the puck in the sink before loading for thirty seconds with my synthetic brush. There looked to be barely any on the bristles but I decided to start working it on my face and was surprised to find that, with a little water, it turned into a good amount of lather. Slickness was okay, no more, but I only picked up a couple of nicks and they sealed themselves by the time I reached cold water. I did have some irritation on my top lip though. My neck was nice and smooth. My trouble-spots had some roughness but it felt less than usual. The finish was good WTG on my face. ATG wasn’t bad either, but there were some areas of resistance beyond what I would have liked. Nowhere quite made it to BBS but a few places went close. Post shave feel was okay, soft but quite dry. I don’t remember a fragrance of any kind. A very good shave.

Used with: Van der Hagen Ice Tempered Stainless (4th shave)

I soaked the puck as I filled the sink and then loaded for thirty seconds using my synthetic brush. I was unsure I had enough to produce the required quantity of lather but a dip or two of the bristles turned it into a rich coating. Slickness felt pretty good but it wasn’t enough to prevent me picking up quite a few nicks. The blade did feel a little rough. All but a few were sealed by the time I washed off with cold water. My neck was very good, aside from the usual trouble-spots. It was a little raw in places. WTG my face was very smooth. ATG was excellent too, with very little resistance. Nowhere quite made it to BBS though. Post shave feel was okay, but a little dry. I got a slight whiff of something during the shave, not sure I’d go so far as to call it a fragrance. A very good shave.

Used with: Croma Diamant Stainless (3rd shave)

I soaked the puck before loading for thirty seconds with my synthetic brush. It didn’t look like much but provided plenty of lather for my usual routine. Slickness was pretty good but I still picked up a few nicks, only one survived to the end of the shave and that was sealed by cold water. My neck was generally good but there was some roughness in the usual trouble-spots. WTG my face was nice and smooth. There was some resistance ATG, nothing too bad but a bit more than I’d have liked. Nowhere made it to BBS. Post shave feel was pretty good, soft and smooth. I got a faint whiff of what I assume is the fragrance at times during the shave, but otherwise nothing. A very good shave.

Verdict

It seemed to take me a couple of shaves to find my feet with this, but once I did it performed pretty well.

It was easy to lather and I was generally able to get good results, which is the most import thing. It’s also great value for money, despite being a pretty small puck.

Against it, well there’s no real fragrance to speak of. Not a problem as such, but some prefer one. Slickness seemed okay but protection was a bit lacking. I picked up nicks no matter which blade I used, although these were generally small and sealed themselves. I rarely got irritation, which is kind of the point of using the Aloe Vera.

Post shave feel was a little underwhelming. Often it left me soft but wasn’t anything┬áspecial.

For the price it’s hard to complain though. An able, if unspectacular product.
