Feather Blades

Feather Blades

Supposedly the sharpest blades available, generally not considered suitable for starters, with a fearsome reputation.

This was the first blade I tried and I ended up using it for about eight shaves. The first couple resulted in a few nicks and plenty of razor burn, although that might have been down to my technique (both with the razor and producing a lather). I still got a great shave on the eighth one though, so they’ve got legs.

2nd blade > 1st shave
Edwin Jagger Sandlewood Soap

Having used a lot of blades since this being my first, and hopefully having improved my technique, I thought this would be a great experience. Although I picked up less irritation, I had nicks aplenty, including some significant ones. In places the end result was very smooth, but ATG was generally disappointing, especially on my neck.

2nd blade > 2nd shave
Palmolive Shave Stick

Felt fine throughout the shave, no pulling. Again, I picked up plenty of nicks. I caught the edge of my mouth at one point, not painfully, and it wasn’t so much a weeper as a gusher. Most were sorted by my post-shave cold water rinse though. A better finish this time, though still not perfect ATG.

2nd blade > 3rd shave
Mitchell’s Wool Fat Shaving Soap

The blade felt a little rougher during the shave, and I picked up half-a-dozen nicks again, although they were smaller and less serious than the previous shave. Still not perfect ATG, but a better shave than the previous two, although I could have done with going over the harder to reach areas a couple more times.

2nd blade > 4th shave
Arko Shave Cream (Moist)

There was definitely some roughness to the blade, not quite pulling, but definitely some scraping. Having said that, I ended up with far fewer nicks this time. Despite touching up, the end result was a bit patchy, with some places ultra smooth, and others not, especially ATG.

2nd blade > 5th shave
The Real Shaving Co. Sensitive Shave Cream Classic

The blade felt reasonable smooth in use, but by the time i’d finished touching up around the corners of my mouth I had some significant nicks. Ironically, one of the best results of all the shaves with this particular blade though. Wasn’t 100% ATG, but generally smooth. I did get some irritation on my top lip as well.

They are sharp, no doubting that, but they’re also very unforgiving. Despite picking up several months experience, the second blade still nicked me rotten. They didn’t seem to offer a significantly closer shave compared to others I’ve used either.
