Gentleman Jon Sandalwood Shave Soap

A glycerine-based soap that uses 100% natural ingredients.

Used with: Super-Max Blue Diamond (3rd shave)

I was a bit dubious of this transparent glycerine puck, but splashed a few drops of water on it before loading for thirty seconds using my badger brush. I didn’t think I had much loaded but it produced plenty of lather. Slickness felt pretty good but it didn’t prevent me picking up plenty of nicks, though only a few survived to the end of the shave. My neck was pretty close, but it did have a couple of rough spots, mainly along my jawline. WTG my face was smooth. ATG wasn’t bad either, but there were a few places where the resistance was greater than I’d have liked. Nowhere was close to BBS. Post shave feel was okay, but quite dry. I picked up a little of the fragrance at the start but don’t remember it after that. I think I could detect some sandalwood, but it was more of a generic sweet scent. Not unpleasant though. A good shave.

Used with: Lord Super Stainless (4th shave)

I didn’t add any water before loading for thirty seconds with my boar brush. It didn’t look like enough but I worked it and added some water and was able to get plenty. I didn’t have a vast amount for touch-ups though. Slickness was almost non-existent, with it being quite sticky between passes. I didn’t pick up any nicks though. My neck was a mix of rough and smooth, with some significant patches. WTG my face was good. ATG generally wasn’t bad but a few places were below par and I had some rough spots at the corners of my mouth. Nowhere made it close to BBS. Post shave feel was fine, but a little dry. I got a whiff of scent before I started but don’t remember it during the shave. A pretty good shave.

Used with: Rapira Super Stainless (1st shave)

I sprinkled a few drops on the top before loading with my badger brush for thirty seconds. It didn’t look like I had enough and was quite pasty, but a bit of water soon turned it into a beautiful lather. Slickness felt okay and I didn’t pick up any nicks. I had a couple of rough patches on my neck and jawline, but otherwise it was pretty good. WTG the finish was nice. There were a few places where it wasn’t as smooth as it could have been ATG and nowhere made it to BBS. Post shave feel was quite dry. Putting my nose to the puck I picked up the sweet scent, but I didn’t get anything during the shave. A good shave all in all.

Used with: Gillette Rubie Platinum Plus (2nd shave)

I decided to soak the puck before loading this time, though not for very long. I used the water as a pre-shave. Lather was easy to generate once again. Slickness felt okay and I didn’t pick up any nicks. I had a rough patch low down on my neck and some more on more jawline, but other than that the finish was good. WTG it was nice and smooth on my face. ATG was fine except for a little roughness around the corner of my mouth. Nowhere made it to BBS. Post shave feel was a bit dry. I got a slight whiff of the fragrance at the start, but don’t remember it after that. A good shave.

Used with: Ladas Super Stainless (3rd shave)

I opted to sprinkle a few drops of water on the puck before loading with my badger brush for the usual thirty seconds. Once again I had plenty of lather, though I did have to add a little water to help bring out the best. Slickness didn’t feel great but I didn’t pick up any nicks. The finish on my neck was very good, with only the barest hint of roughness. My face was smooth WTG but not as close ATG. It wasn’t bad, but there were some patches that were rougher than I’d have liked. Nowhere quite made it to BBS. Post shave feel was pretty good. I don’t remember registering the fragrance at all. A very good shave, almost a great one.

Verdict

Having had poor experiences with a number of transparent glycerine-based soaps I started out a bit dubious with this. I needn’t have worried though as it did the job well.

I found the best method was to load fairly dry and then add water as I built the lather on my face, which produced a glossy coating. It was never hard to whip it up though.

Slickness was okay, as was protection, but not up to the best. It was the same with regards to post shave; it wasn’t as moisturising as the top performers.

Even the manufacturer says the scent was designed to “be present, but not over potent.” I’d say it was even weaker than that and I struggled to identify sandalwood from a generic, sweet fragrance. It’s certainly not bad but not something to buy it for.

So it’s very affordable¬†and it does a good job of the basics, even if it doesn’t match the best in a couple of areas (but then it doesn’t match their price tag either). I was pleasantly surprised by this and would be happy to recommend.
