Gentlemen's Tonic Traditional Shave Cream

Another grooming company based in an upscale part of London.

Used with: Gillette 7 O’Clock Super Stainless (4th shave)

I scraped a small amount of cream from the pot, it’s very firm, and smeared into my stubble before working it with my badger brush. Lather exploded without any effort. I didn’t use that much but I’ll try even less next time. Slickness was very good and I didn’t pick up any nicks. My neck was nice and close. Not quite perfect but there were no rough patches. WTG my face was smooth. ATG was pretty good too. It wasn’t especially close and I had a couple of areas where resistance was a little more than I’d have liked, but I wouldn’t go so far as to call them rough. Nowhere quite made it to BBS but a few spots went close. Post shave feel was good, maybe a little dry. The fragrance isn’t powerful, but I picked it up a couple of times during the shave and it’s very pleasant. I’m not sure how to describe it, but I like it. A very good shave.

Used with: Personna Platinum (1st shave)

A tiny amount of cream and my boar brush were able to generate a good amount of lather. I had to work it a bit harder this time though. Slickness was very good once again but it didn’t prevent me picking up some nicks. They were all small but some survived past cold water. There was some roughness low down on my neck and along my jawline, but it was a smooth finish otherwise. WTG my face was nice and smooth. There were a couple of areas that had greater resistance ATG, the overall finish was generally good though. I had some rawness on my top lip. Post shave feel was very nice, but a little dry again. I got the scent throughout, but you do have to hunt for it a bit. Nice though. A good shave.

Used with: Voskhod (2nd shave)

I opted for a cold water shave this time, not the best experience, but nothing to do with the cream. My badger brush was able to produce bags of lather from a small amount. Slickness was good and I didn’t pick up any nicks. My neck was very good, with the only roughness coming along my jawline. WTG my face was very smooth. I had some resistance ATG but nothing besides regular stubble. Nowhere quite made BBS, but several places were very close. Post shave feel was good. The fragrance was low key this time, it was there but I had to hunt for it. A very good shave.

Used with: Personna ‘Lab Blue’ (3rd shave)

My badger brush easily turned a small amount of cream into a mountain of lather. Even adding some water it was still thick enough to clog the blade. Slickness felt good but it didn’t prevent me picking up more than a few small nicks and some irritation. My neck was very good. Close and only one area of roughness. My jawline, which is usually a problem, was fine. WTG my face was smooth. ATG I had a couple of places that were slightly rougher than the rest, but not bad. Nowhere made it to BBS though. Post shave feel was okay, but perhaps a little dry. The fragrance was very subtle, hard to detect even when I was hunting for it. A very good finish, but spoiled a bit by the experience.

Used with: Bolzano Superinox (2nd shave)

I used a small amount of cream, but probably still too much. With a bit of water, my badger brush converted it into tons of lather, yet it was still thick enough to clog my blade. Slickness felt good and I only picked up a couple of nicks, which sealed themselves before I finished. My neck had the best finish it’s ever had, with the barest hint of roughness in a couple of places but smooth everywhere else. WTG my face was smooth, as you’d expect. I struggled to find much in the way of resistance ATG. A few places even made it to BBS. Post shave feel was a little dry though. The fragrance was there again, though so subtle it’s hard to pick up (sometimes I think I’m imagining it). It’s nice though. A great shave.

Premium grooming brands based in London seem to be all the rage at the moment, although you could argue they have been for some time with the likes of the three Ts having been around, and based in London, for more than a century.

This cream seems to have gone up in price quite a bit since I bought mine, but there are offers to be had if you hunt around. At full price it’s up at the premium end of the market, but it’s far from the most expensive product.

That said, it lathers easily using small amounts of cream. I also got good shaves each time. In fact, it provided possibly the best shave I have had to date.

Against that, while slickness was good, it didn’t provide enough protection to prevent a lot of nicks. Post shave feel was also quite dry.

While I liked the unusual fragrance, I did have to hunt for it, and even then it was hard to pick up, so both a plus and a minus on that score.

Overall I was very pleased with it though and would be happy to recommend it to anyone.
