Geo. F. Trumper Almond Shaving Cream

Another almond shaving product, it seems to be a very popular scent.

Used with: Rapira Super Stainless (3rd shave)

I scooped out a small amount of cream before lathering with my badger brush. I had shaken it out and the lather was quite pasty initially, a dip of the bristles caused it to explode into life. Slickness felt pretty good and I didn’t pick up any nicks, despite the blade tugging throughout. My neck was generally smooth but there were a couple of rough patches, mainly along my jawline. WTG my face was smooth, ATG was pretty good too. Nowhere quite made it to BBS but a few places were close. Post shave feel was nice. I was expecting a strong marzipan scent but actually I couldn’t pick up any fragrance at all. Almost a very good shave.

Used with: Sputnik (1st shave)

Once again a small glob of cream was easily turned into a good lather. Once again I had to add some water during the process as my shaken-dry boar brush was finding it too pasty. Slickness felt good but it didn’t stop me picking up a few nicks, though the one weeper was my fault. My neck was okay, but I did have a big rough patch low down and more along my jawline. WTG my face was nice and smooth. ATG wasn’t bad but nowhere got close to BBS. I didn’t have any significant rough patches either though. Post shave feel was good. I stuck my nose in the sample pot and just about picked up some marzipan this time, but it was a struggle. A pretty good shave.

Used with: Wilkinson Sword Classic (4th shave)

I used up the rest of the pot, rubbing it into my bristles before working it with my badger brush. I had to add some water to thin it out but it still clogged my razor on the first pass. Slickness felt very good but it didn’t prevent me picking up quite a few nicks. Most were small and sealed themselves before I finished but some lingered. Aside from one area that had a hint of roughness my neck was very good. Even the problem areas along my jawline were smooth. My face WTG was very good too. There were a couple of rough spots ATG but nothing serious. A couple of areas did make it to BBS. Post shave feel was fine, but perhaps a little dry. With the pot under my nose I picked up the family marzipan scent of almond, but that was the only time I got any whiff of the fragrance. A very good shave.

As with the other GFT creams, this performed well enough. It’s a cream that needs a bit of water to get the best out of it but feed it right and you’ll be rewarded with¬†great lather and plenty of slickness.

I was able to get some good shaves but it wasn’t always enough to prevent nicks. The feel it left behind was generally good too, though not up to the best.

For the price point on the premium creams you’re expecting more than performance though, that should be a given (as you can get it in much cheaper products). So I was expecting other things to enhance the experience¬†and scent is usually one of those.

I’m not a massive fan of almond fragrances, but it’s not something I would shy away from. In this case it didn’t matter as it was so weak I could only detect it with the cream right under my nose. Other than that it might as well have been unscented.

So a perfectly adequate performer but nothing to write home about.
