Geo. F. Trumper Violet Shaving Cream

A cream from another of the big names, this time in an unusual floral scent.

Used with: Gillette 7 O’Clock Super Stainless (4th shave)

The sample size I have isn’t particularly large but I scooped out a small amount with a finger and face lathered with my badger brush. I had to use a bit of water to thin it out and increase the volume. Slickness felt good between passes and I only picked up a single nick (due to overzealous touching up). My neck was patchy and I missed a few spots on my jawline, nothing too bad/unexpected. Above the jaw, some places made BBS and rest were pretty close. Great post shave feel. The violet fragrance is nice, it was just strong enough to pick up during the shave, but subtle and it didn’t linger (I used some of the coral skin tonic which has a good scent). The strong purple colour makes it stand out, in a good way. A very good shave.

Used with: Super-Max Stainless (1st shave)

Again, the amount I could extract on the end of a little finger was enough to produce lather for two passes and a ton of touch-ups. Slickness was pretty good once again, maybe not quite up with the best I’ve tried, but more than good enough and I didn’t have any nicks. The blade dig tug for most of the first pass. Not a bad finish on my neck, certainly not as patchy as usual. My jawline wasn’t so lucky. Above that was pretty good. It didn’t make BBS but was smooth WTG. Post shave feel was nice. I got a good whiff of the scent at the start of the shave but didn’t notice it thereafter and it didn’t linger. A good shave.

Used with: Rapira Platinum Lux (2nd shave)

I used up the remainder of the pot and needed to dip my badger brush a few times to help produce a glossy lather. The lather started to get a little airy towards the end, I put this down to the lack of cream in previous uses, but I used a lot more this time so I was a bit surprised. Slickness felt good but I did pick up a couple of small nicks. My neck was okay, my jawline too, nothing special and with a few patches. I had a few around my mouth as well, but the rest of my face was good, with a couple of areas making it to BBS. Post shave feel was good. I got a lot more of the fragrance this time, though it is subtle. Just about a good shave.

My only previous experience with violet was the little sweets and this does smell similar. It’s a powdery, sweet scent that I quite liked. It’s so subtle that there’s no fear it’ll linger and you may need to hunt for it. Combined with the startling colour, it made for an entertaining cream. The performance was pretty good too, though lather did need a bit of work and it didn’t explode as readily as some others. The cream does seem quite thirsty. Slickness did the job and post shave feel was nice. It’s not particularly expensive for a full size tub, considering its large size, but the performance and lack of scent mean there are better value for money options out there. If violet is your thing, you don’t have a lot of choices though.
