Gillette are obviously a big name in shaving, but are still players in the safety razor market too.
1st blade > 1st shave
Truefitt & Hill Authentic No. 10 Finest Shave Cream
Although made by Gillette, these are made in Russia. No tugging or dragging, just a nice smooth shave. Left me with a great finish all over (after some touching up) and only one tiny nick.
1st blade > 2nd shave
Palmolive Shave Stick
Again, a nice smooth experience, but I picked up a few more nicks this time, and some burn on my top lip. I didn’t get as good a shave this time, with more patches that caught ATG, but still a pretty good finish.
2nd blade > 1st shave
Omega Shaving Cream
I struggled to get a good coating for my second pass, but the blade was smooth throughout and I only picked up one nick. I did get some dryness/irritation on my top lip though. I had to go over one of the corners of my mouth a whole lot of times to get it close. The finish was a little patchy on my neck, but close to BBS on my cheeks, so a good shave.
2nd blade > 2nd shave
Edwin Jagger Sandalwood Soap
The soap seems to have hardened to the point where even soaking it doesn’t result in a very good lather. I also found the slickness after the first pass dire. I reloaded my brush before the second pass. Despite that, I didn’t pick up any nicks. It wasn’t a perfect finish, with some rougher patches, but was generally very smooth and some near-BBS areas again.
2nd blade > 3rd shave
Taylor of Old Bond Street Jermyn Street Collection Shaving Cream
A much better lather to test with this time, so thick it clogged the blade, but it also provided a slick surface. So it was a bit surprising that I picked up plenty of nicks and some dryness/irritation on my lip and neck. The blade was smooth throughout and, after touching up, ended with a good finish. It was a little patchy on my neck, but above my jaw was near perfection, BBS, but not quite across the board. Excellent shave.
2nd blade > 4th shave
Mitchell’s Wool Fat Shaving Soap
A ton of lather this time and a nice, smooth shave. I did pick up more than a few nicks, nothing that didn’t heal itself, plus some dryness on my top lip again. They were probably the result of an aging blade. Not so the finish, which was nice and smooth. Once again it was BBS practically everywhere above my jawline. Great shave.
As with any blade, a good lather obviously makes a difference, but I got consistently good results. A blade I’d happily use again.
