A new manufacturer tackling a very traditional soap scent.
Used with: Shark Super Stainless (1st shave)
I sprinkled a few drops on the surface then loaded with my shaken out badger brush. Thirty seconds loading gave me plenty of lather for my usual routine. Slickness was okay when I added water but without it my face felt dry and unprotected. I didn’t pick up any nicks or irritation though. My neck was pretty good except for up by my jawline, where the usual roughness remained. Above that was smooth with only the odd stray hair to disturb it. Nowhere quite made it to BBS ATG but a couple of places were close. Post shave feel was very average. I don’t know how it compares to other bay rums, but the fragrance is deep and thick and rich. I like it. Although it fell back during the shave I could still pick it up throughout and indeed it lingered a bit afterwards. A pretty good shave.
Used with: Wilkinson Sword Classic (2nd shave)
This time I covered the puck in water as I soaked my badger brush, then loaded for thirty seconds. I picked up plenty of paste without creating vast amounts of suds. Slickness was good with wet hands and I didn’t pick up any nicks. In places my neck was very good, but I did have a few rough patches, mainly around my throat and jawline. My face was nice and smooth. Nowhere quite made it to BBS ATG though. Once again, post shave feel was okay, but not exemplary. The scent seemed less potent this time. Even taking the top off the tub I wasn’t hit by a blast, but it was there throughout the shave. It didn’t linger though. A good shave.
Used with: Rapira Platinum Lux (4th shave)
I tried a different tack with this shave. I sprinkled a few drops on the top before loading for thirty seconds with my boar brush. No problem producing plenty of lather. Slickness felt good and I didn’t pick up any nicks despite a blade that tugged like mad on one side. My neck wasn’t particular close and I had plenty of rough patches, especially by my jaw. WTG my face felt smooth but ATG there were a few areas of roughness. A couple of places were close to BBS. Post shave was good, not quite top drawer though. The fragrance was strong again and I got plenty of blasts of the thick, intoxicating scent during the shave. I didn’t pick up anything afterwards though. A pretty good shave.
Used with: Bolzano Superinox (3rd shave)
A few drops of water and I lathered with my badger brush. Thirty seconds of loading was all I needed for plenty of lather. Slickness felt good and I didn’t pick up any nicks. My neck wasn’t bad, but I had some roughness, especially up by my jawline. Aside from a few stray hairs my face was nice and smooth. Nowhere quite made it to BBS ATG, but a couple of places went close. Post shave feel was good. The fragrance was strong when I opened the tub. It died back during the shave but I could pick it up as a running theme throughout. A good shave.
Used with: Perma Sharp Super (1st shave)
I sprinkled a small amount of water on the puck before loading my boar brush for thirty seconds. This provided more than enough lather. Slickness felt good but I did pick up a few nicks (on the underside of my chin, so likely my fault). My neck was much better than usual, though not perfect (a couple of rougher areas). Even the jawline was pretty smooth. My face was also pretty good, though with a few areas that weren’t quite smooth. Nowhere quite made it to BBS ATG and I did pick up a little irritation. Post shave was okay, but a little dry (better once I’d remembered to apply some balm). I picked up the scent at the start and a couple of times during the shave, but it wasn’t particularly strong. Nothing afterwards. Still a pretty good shave.
This is my first strict bay rum scented product so it’s hard to compare. It’s a good thick scent, but the soap did seem to struggle to provide it consistently, with some shaves where it was strong and others where I had to hunt for it.
Post shave feel also left a bit to be desired. It wasn’t bad, generally, but wasn’t up with the best either. The same could be said for the slickness, cushion and glide. It performed perfectly well, but I never managed an excellent finish.
Price wise it’s very competitive though, and this is a new product that is evolving, with refinements being made. At the moment it’s a pretty good performer available at a good price point, so it’s definitely worth a go. The longer it’s around the better it’ll get I’m sure.
