The cream equivalent of the classic shave stick.
Used with: Gillette Nacet (4th shave)
I didn’t use much cream but still what I thought would be plenty yet I had to work it a fair bit to get a good amount of lather, even then I didn’t have a lot for touch-ups. It also stayed quite pasty despite adding water. Slickness felt fine but I picked up a few nicks. My neck was nice and close but I had a couple of bits of roughness and some rawness. WTG my face was smooth. ATG was pretty good with no real roughness. Nowhere made it to BBS though. The scent was barely present, what was there was slightly chemical. A very good shave.
Used with: Super-Max Blue Diamond (2nd shave)
I used a little more cream this time, but I still had to work it to get a good lather. Despite adding water it still remained pasty, so can probably be classed as thirsty. I’ll try more water next time. Slickness felt good but it didn’t prevent me picking up a few nicks, only one serious. The finish on my neck was pretty good, with only a couple of patches (mainly my jawline) that had any hint of roughness. No problems WTG on my face. Aside from a small spot at the corner of my mouth, it was good ATG too. Nowhere quite made it to BBS though. Post shave feel was pretty good, nice and soft. I got a slightly generic shampoo scent at the start, but this disappeared as I started to shave. A very good shave.
Used with: Lord Super Stainless (1st shave)
I used perhaps a little more cream this time, but had no problems with the lather except I needed to add water to thin it out, both for the first and second passes. The blade tugged like mad on the first pass. Slickness was fine and I only picked up one significant nick. The finish on my neck was pretty good, not especially close but fine, though I had roughness in the usual spots. WTG my face was smooth. Nowhere was especially close ATG, but equally nowhere was particularly rough either. No chance of BBS though. Post shave feel was okay, but maybe a little dry. I got a stronger scent this time, not shampoo, more chemical. Not unpleasant but not great either. It stayed throughout. A good shave.
Used with: Rapira Super Stainless (3rd shave)
I used a good drop of cream then loaded with my badger brush. It required a little water to thin out, but didn’t clog my blade. Slickness felt okay and I didn’t pick up any nicks. My neck was very good with only the barest hint of roughness in the usual places. No problems WTG on my face. ATG wasn’t bad either, with only a few spots of resistance. Nowhere made it to BBS though. Post shave feel was pretty good, though not as moisturised as some. I picked up the chemical scent of the cream a couple of times. Not particularly strong, which is a good thing as it’s not a great smell. A very good shave.
Used with: Gillette Rubie Platinum Plus (1st shave)
I was easily able to build a good lather using an almond-sized dollop of cream and my boar brush. I did need to add water to help thin it out though. Slickness felt good but it didn’t prevent me picking up a few nicks, they were all sealed before I reached the cold water wash down though. My neck was good, pretty close on the whole and only a hint of roughness in the usual places. My jawline had some rough spots though. WTG my face was good. ATG wasn’t bad and I had no problem areas, but neither was it especially close. Nowhere approached BBS. Post shave feel was pretty good. I don’t remember picking up the fragrance at all. A good shave.
Like the shave stick equivalent, this is a cheap, long-standing product that gets the job done without any fanfare.
I had to add a fair bit of water and work it to get the best lather (for me). Slickness was good but judging by the number of nicks I picked up I’m not sure cushion was the best.
Obviously you don’t buy this for the fragrance and at this price you wouldn’t expect much, so it’s not really a let down that the only thing I got was a chemical tang, although even that was rare.
To sum it up I’d say it was a solid, but unremarkable, performer. Good if you want something cheap that you can guarantee will get the job done.
