Personna Super Lab Blues

Another Personna product, the ‘Lab Blue’  (supposedly because it’s sold for laboratory use) has a good rep.

1st blade > 1st shave
Mitchell’s Wool Fat Soap

I thought it was biting at first, but I didn’t pick up any nicks or irritation and, aside from a few patches around my jaw, ended up with a wonderfully smooth shave. I had to do a few touch ups to get there though, and while I wouldn’t go so far as to say burn, it did leave my top lip feeling very dry.

1st blade > 2nd shave
Arko (Moist) shave cream

I had to go over a few areas again, and my top lip felt dry afterwards as well, though not as bad as with the first shave. But it was worth it, because I ended up with a very smooth end result and zero nicks. A few patches on my neck and jaw were the only where it was a bit patchy.

2nd blade > 1st shave
Proraso Eucalyptus & Menthol Shave Cream

It felt sharp from the very first stroke, and that was backed up by the numbers of nicks I collected, some which even cold water didn’t seal. I was also left with some dryness, especially on my lip. I was left with a nice smooth finish though, BBS in places.

2nd blade > 2nd shave
Mitchell’s Wool Fat Shaving Soap

A smother shave this time, but I still picked up a lot of nicks, some of which weren’t sealed by my cold water wash down. Again, there was a touch of dryness on my lip. The end result was smooth throughout (save for the odd patch), even BBS in places.

2nd blade > 3rd shave
The Real Shaving Co. Moisturising Shave Cream

No problems with the blade, and fewer nicks this time, but still a few. They largely sealed themselves with cold water. I felt like I had to go over some of the key areas more than usual. It resulted in a smooth finish all over, though not the closest, and not BBS. A good shave rather than a great one.

2nd blade > 4th shave
Taylor of Old Bond Street Jermyn Street Collection Shaving Cream

It was smooth enough WTG, but turned harsh when I went ATG. This was borne out by the number of nicks I picked up, some WTG (unusual) and so many ATG that my neck was a wall of blossoming red. I also found myself going over places like the corners of my mouth repeatedly to get a smooth result. That meant the finish was decidedly patchy, with some areas smooth, and many not. I also finished with plenty of irritation.

A sharp blade that gives a good end result, but at the price of picking up a few nicks. Marked down slightly for that reason, and because it didn’t seem to have much in the way of legs, with the fourth shave being horrendous.
