Rapira Platinum Lux

Another blade from Rapira, but does it live up to it’s luxury name?

1st blade > 1st shave
Mitchell’s Wool Fat Shaving Soap

As usual, the first few strokes seemed a bit rough, as the blade picked up some lubrication, but after that it was smooth. No nicks, but a little dryness. The finish wasn’t the best I’ve had ATG, but overall it was a good result.

1st blade > 2nd shave
Arko Shave Stick

Felt pretty smooth from start to finish, though I did end up with a couple of nicks, though none too serious. Left me with a smooth and soft finish. If I’m being super-critical there was a little bit of resistance ATG, as with the previous shave.

2nd blade > 1st shave
Proraso Eucalytus & Menthol Shave Cream

As with the first blade, it felt rough initially, on both sides, but settled down to provide a comfortable shave. I managedĀ a solitary nick. After touching up I was left with a generally smooth finish. It wasn’t close enough to be BBS, and was a little patchy in places. Not a bad shave, but not a great one.

2nd blade > 2nd shave
Haslinger Coconut Shaving Soap

Despite not feeling much slickness after the first pass, and only a bit more after the second, I didn’t get any nicks. The amount of touching up I had to do may explain that though. The blade felt good, but I had to do a lot of extra work to get a reasonable finish. That said, it was generally smooth, with fewer patches than I’m sometimes left with. Nowhere was particularly close though, and certainly not BBS. A pleasant enough shave, but I wouldn’t go so far as to call it good.

2nd blade > 3rd shave
Truefitt & Hill 1805 Shaving Cream

Slickness felt good after the first pass, not so much after the second, although I didn’t pick up any nicks. The blade did tug though, so dullness may have been the reason rather than the excellence of the protection. I also did a lot of touching up. As a result, nowhere was particularly smooth ATG, and I had a few rough patches.

2nd blade > 4th shave
Mitchell’s Wool Fat Shaving Soap

Good performance from the Fat as ever, but it couldn’t stop the blade tugging throughout. I picked up a few nicks on my neck this time, but also had to go over some areas multiple times to anywhere near close. Aside from a few of the harder to reach places, above my chin was pretty good. Below it was far more hit and miss. I think it would be fair to say the blade was past its best.

Before I started my second blade I thought this had been one of the better performers, but reading back my words, and having used another blade, it’s fallen down my rankings. It performed well-enough, though not spectacularly, for the first shave or two, but I could feel it going off the boil with each use. So points deducted for a lack of longevity. They were pretty smooth, resulting in few nicks, but equally didn’t get that close.
