RazoRock XXX

A legend of the wet shave community.

Used with: Personna Platinum (4th shave)

I sprinkled some water on the surface before wetting my face, then loaded for thirty seconds with my badger brush. Lather wasn’t a problem. Slickness was pretty good too, though I did pick up a few small nicks, all sealed themselves. My neck wasn’t perfect, but not bad. The only roughness was limited to patches along my jawline and low down, but the overall finish wasn’t especially close. WTG was nice and smooth. ATG was good, with little resistance and no significant roughness. Nowhere quite made it to BBS, but a couple of places went close. Post shave feel was nice. I wouldn’t describe the fragrance as strong, but it’s not bad. It stayed with me but did fade towards the end of the shave. It’s pleasant enough, but the overwhelming scent to me was almond. A very good shave.

Used with: Voskhod (1st shave)

I started as with the previous shave, only using my boar brush. Actually, it was more than a sprinkle of water this time, but it didn’t sit for long and I used the run-off as a pre-shave. I had plenty of lather. Slickness was very good, but I did pick up a couple of nicks, all sealed themselves before I finished. I had a bit of roughness on my neck and jawline but the rest of the finish was good. No problems WTG on my face. ATG wasn’t especially close, though I didn’t have any significant roughness. My top lip and my chin managed BBS, but that was it. Post shave feel was okay. I can’t say I noticed the fragrance at all this time. A pretty good shave.

Used with: Personna ‘Lab Blue’ (2nd shave)

I splashed a thin layer of water on the top before loading with my badger brush. Lather was no problem again. Slickness felt very good. It didn’t prevent me picking up a few nicks (one a weeper) due to some overzealous touching up though. My neck was pretty good, but I did have some rough spots along my jawline. No such problems WTG on my face. There was some resistance ATG but the only real roughness was limited to a small patch at the corner of my mouth. Nowhere made it to BBS. Post shave feel was okay, a little dry and I had some irritation. I got a whiff of the fragrance at the start and the faintest reminders during the shave. Less almond this time, but with a hint of something fruity instead. Not bad but not something to rave about. A good shave.

Used with: Bolzano Superinox (3rd shave)

I didn’t add any water to the puck this time, but left my badger brush a tad wetter before loading for thirty seconds. I had tons of lather. Slickness felt pretty good and I didn’t pick up any nicks. I didn’t have any particularly bad spots on my neck, but neither was it especially close. My face was smooth WTG. ATG wasn’t bad either, with only the barest resistance. A couple of places made it to BBS, but they were the exception rather than the rule. Post shave feel was pretty good. I picked up the fragrance a few times throughout, though faintly. Still not sure about it. A very good shave.

Used with: Gillette Nacet (1st shave)

I sprinkled some water on the top before loading for thirty seconds with my boar brush. Lather was no problem. Slickness felt good but didn’t prevent me picking up a few nicks, though none lasted past the cold water. My neck was pretty good with the only real roughness coming along my jawline. WTG my face was smooth. ATG wasn’t bad either, with no significant rough patches. That said, neither was it especially close and nowhere reached BBS. Post shave feel was okay but a bit dry. I don’t remember picking up the fragrance at all during the shave. A good shave.

Verdict

This is well-known in the shave community and often makes it into the top ten of many people’s lists. I believe this is a later, re-formulated version, so possibly not as good as the original.

Lather was never a problem, no matter what I tried it always produced tons. Slickness was equally good but cushion lacked a little something as I often picked up nicks.

Post shave feel didn’t blow me away either, and I wasn’t too fond of the fragrance (which this is often lauded for). I didn’t find it particularly enticing or “a cross between a classic Italian colonia and an old-school barbershop.”

However, I always managed a good shave with this, as with most of the RazoRock products. It’s hard to complain about their performance, at any price, let alone at the low-cost that this comes in at.

If you love the scent, this is not going to disappoint; it’s from the RazoRock stable and that guarantees pretty decent performance. For me it just didn’t quite make top tier.
