RazoRock XX Shaving Soap

My first review of the X series from RazoRock, the XXX has a great rep, but will XX be lesser?

Used with: Lord Super Stainless (2nd shave)

I used my boar and soaked the puck, then loaded for thirty seconds, my usual technique. As with other RR products I’ve tried, lather was quick and plentiful. I didn’t think there was too much slickness after the first pass, but it improved after the second. No nicks or irritation, despite a lot of work in the final touch-up phase. Despite that, the finish wasn’t perfect, with a few rough patches, notably around my jawline. My top lip managed BBS, but nowhere else, although it was pretty close. Great post shave feel, nice and soft. The best thing was the smell though. I’m not sure I can describe it (it’s complex, reading the description, supposedly based on Acqua di Parma Blue Mediterraneo). It’s more of a cologne smell. So nice I may pick up the aftershave milk too.

Used with: Treet Platinum Super Stainless (2nd shave)

I forgot to soak it, so dry loaded with my boar for thirty seconds. I got a good lather, but there wasn’t much slickness, hardly any after the first pass, but a bit better after the second. I picked up nicks starting with my second pass, which is unusual, and ended up with a horror show. One was so bad it reopened after a shower and repeated use of an alum block. I gave up trying to get all the areas around my mouth for fear of what might happen. The finish was very patchy, with some smooth areas but plenty that weren’t. Once again, pleasant fragrance, that lingered for quite a while.

Used with: Gillette Nacet Stainless (3rd shave)

I remembered to soak it this time and used my boar again, which produced so many suds I had to give up before I could reach 30 seconds. Clots were falling off the brush as I tried to thicken it up on my face. Slickness wasn’t bad after each pass, but it wasn’t top drawer either. That said, I didn’t pick up any nicks, just some slight dryness on my top lip. I did plenty of touching up, but this ensured a great finish, so smooth it was nearly BBS all over my face and neck. I wasn’t as fussed about the fragrance when I started, but was loving it by the end. All in all a great shave.

Used with: Lord Platinum Class (1st shave)

I soaked it again, but this time opted for my badger brush, shaking it as dry as I could and loading slowly, which prevented the explosion of suds and allowed me to load without so much mess. I still got plenty for two passes and a lot of touch ups. I did find myself adding some water as I applied my second coat though. Good slickness left behind each time. I didn’t pick up any nicks until I repeatedly went over my top lip, which left with multiple, along with some irritation. The finish was almost BBS in places, but it was a little patchy too. Great scent again and a pleasing shave.

Used with: Treet Platinum Super Stainless (2nd shave)

Plenty of lather from thirty seconds of swirling, so much I couldn’t keep it all on the brush. Despite that, I picked up plenty of nicks, some serious to the point they re-opened after cold water had sealed them. I had irritation on my top lip too. I did feel that the amount of slickness after the first pass was a bit average, but better after the second. I did plenty of touching up, but the end result was still very patchy and not especially close either. Loving the smell, but a decidedly average shave.

Love the scent, easily my favourite, and generally great performance. The only negatives were a slight lacking in slickness, after the initial pass at least, and I didn’t think post-shave feel was quite up there with the best. I’d still have no issue recommending it though. Will be interesting to compare it to XXX (which I also have).
