Soap Commander Renewal Shave Soap

A U.S. artisan soap maker with ties to the Navy, yet was founded to offer eczema-friendly products.

Used with: Bolzano Superinox (1st shave)

I pressed the sample into a container and gave it a quick splash of water (a second or so) before loading with my badger brush. It was quite pasty and I had to add some water to get a good lather. I struggled with quantity after that. I had to work it for the second pass and I ran out towards the end of my touch-ups. Slickness was non-existent with the finish being very sticky. That said, I didn’t get any nicks. My jawline was hideously rough, but other than that my neck was good. WTG was smooth on my face. ATG wasn’t bad largely but I had a few rough patches. Nowhere made it to BBS. Post shave feel was pretty good. I did pick up some of the fragrance, early on anyway. It’s a nice sweet scent but didn’t strike me as close to the description. An average shave.

Used with: Voskhod (2nd shave)

I left it dry then loaded for thirty seconds with my boar brush. I had to add some water to both first and second passes and I didn’t have a lot of lather for touch-ups. Slickness was good and I didn’t pick up any nicks. My neck was very good with the only real roughness along my jawline. WTG my face was smooth. Aside from one patch of resistance it was very good ATG too. Nowhere quite made it to BBS but a couple of places went close. Post shave feel was very good, nice and soft. I got a whiff of the fragrance at the start of the shave, but I don’t remember it after that. It’s a pleasant scent, but nothing like ‘Floral Fougere’ of the description. A very good shave.

Used with: Rapira Super Stainless (3rd shave)

I covered the sample as I wet my face, then loaded for thirty seconds with my badger brush. I had to add some water and work it a bit to get the right consistency. I didn’t have quite enough for all the touch-ups I wanted. Slickness felt pretty good and I didn’t pick up any nicks. My neck was close, except for some roughness along my jawline and a spot low down. No problems WTG on my face, smooth as. ATG was good too, though I had some resistance in places. Nowhere quite made it to BBS but a couple of places went close. Post shave feel was nice and soft. I picked up the fragrance when I opened the container and maybe once or twice in the shave, but for the most part it disappeared. A good shave.

Used with: Gillette Silver Blue (4th shave)

I soaked the sample as I filled the sink and wet my face to try and soften it before loading with my badger brush. Not sure it worked but it did result in a lot of fragrance. I had to work it a bit to get the right consistency and I didn’t have huge amount of lather for touch-ups. Slickness was pretty good, but I did pick up a couple of nicks that only cold water could halt. My neck wasn’t especially close but neither were there any rough patches, except along my jawline. Nice and smooth WTG on my face. ATG was pretty good too, but nowhere made it to BBS. Post shave feel was nice but a touch dry. I got a good whiff of the fragrance at the start which died down during the shave, it was there subtly thereafter. It’s a nice enough scent but not something I crave. A good shave.

Used with: Personna Platinum (1st shave)

I again soaked the sample for a while before loading, this time with my boar brush. I was able to build a lather after some work but I didn’t have a huge amount for touch-ups. Not bad though. Slickness was good and I didn’t pick up any nicks. My neck wasn’t bad, but wasn’t especially close and yet felt a little raw. The only real roughness was along my jawline and that was less than usual. Fine WTG on my face. Aside from a minor rough patch on my cheek the finish was pretty good ATG. A couple of spots on my chin made it to BBS but nowhere else got close. Post shave feel was very dry. The fragrance was potent at the start and then lessened through the shave, but stayed with me, just. A pretty good shave.

Verdict

Renewal is just one of many fragrances Soap Commander offer. It’s described as a ‘floral fougere’ with a long list of woody scents. It manifests itself as a sweet, light scent rather than anything earthy. It’s not a bad fragrance but isn’t the sort of thing I’d want to linger. Which is fine as it’s not especially strong, but was enough to accompany me through my shaves.

Building lather seemed a challenge on all the shaves, despite loading for the usual amount of time, sometimes a little longer. Soaking it didn’t help. Each time I had to work both the first and second passes a fair bit, yet I was still left without enough for my full touch-up cycle.

Slickness fluctuated with each shave, never outstanding but generally fine. Nicks were rare. Similar for the post shave; not bad but not much to blow the skirt up.

Looking back, it’s a perfectly respectable performer, but my experience didn’t thrill me and it’s not something I would reach for over other products.
