Tabac Original Shave Soap

This soap, from an old German soapworks, is another legend of the shave community

Used with: Shark Super Chrome (2nd shave)

I soaked the puck before loading for thirty seconds with a shaken dry badger brush. I was able to build plenty of lather. Unusually for a soap, it was so thick it clogged my blade. I had to add water, to thin it out, but also it felt like I needed to stretch it during my second pass, although I had plenty for my usual routine. Slickness didn’t blow me away, but was good enough to save me from any nicks. The finish on my neck was excellent, with only the faintest hint of any roughness, even along my jawline. My face was lovely and smooth WTG. ATG wasn’t bad either, but nowhere reached BBS. Post shave feel was fine, nice and soft but a little dry. The fragrance, as the name suggests, is a tobacco scent. Reading up, it’s far more complex though. I certainly got a smoky vibe, but it smelt like a quality bar of hand soap. It’s not overpowering, but strong enough to be smelt throughout the shave and to linger afterwards. A very good shave.

Used with: Perma Sharp Super (1st shave)

I again bloomed it before loading for thirty seconds, this time with my boar brush. It was thick enough to clog the blade despite using water to thin it out. Slickness was very good, but I did pick up a couple of nicks during touch up (mainly because I didn’t use the lather I had). My neck was very smooth, completely free of rough patches, even along my jawline (which is unheard of). WTG my face was also very smooth. There was a slight feel of stubble ATG and nowhere made it to BBS. Post shave feel was a touch dry again, but otherwise very good. The fragrance was strong once more and even lingered afterwards. It’s pleasant enough, though not something I’d rave about. A very good shave.

Used with: Ladas Super Stainless (3rd shave)

I let some water sit on the surface before loading for thirty seconds with my badger brush. I had to work it on my face and add water before both my first and second passes to thin it out. I had plenty though. Slickness was good and I didn’t pick up any nicks. My neck was very close and was only disturbed by some slight roughness along my jawline. WTG my face felt nice and smooth. ATG was pretty good too, although obviously not quite as smooth. Nowhere made it to BBS. Post shave feel wasn’t bad, but a little dry. The fragrance accompanied me throughout, though it tailed off a little towards the end. I like it, but it’s not something I want to smell of all day. A very good shave.

Used with: Treet Platinum Super Stainless (4th shave)

I loaded from a dry puck using a shaken-out boar brush for thirty seconds. I was easily able to generate plenty of quality lather. Slickness felt good but it didn’t prevent me picking up a ton of nicks, my face was a bloodbath (I blame the blades, I have history with them). My neck was pretty close, but there were a couple of rougher areas, mainly along my jawline. It was tender too. WTG my face felt nice and smooth. There was a some roughness in places ATG. Nowhere made it to BBS. Post shave feel was nice. I didn’t get a much of the scent this time, but it was present throughout and did linger after. Aside from the irritation, it was actually a good finish.

Used with: Gillette 7 O’Clock SharpEdge (2nd shave)

I sprinkled a few drops of water on the surface before loading for thirty seconds with my badger brush. Lather proved no problem once again. Slickness was good and I didn’t pick up any nicks. My neck generally felt nice and smooth, but I did have a couple of rough bits, mainly along my jawline. My face was very smooth WTG and very good ATG (obviously I picked up a bit of stubble, but there was nothing significant). A couple of areas even made it to BBS. Post shave feel was good once again, though perhaps a little dry. The scent was subtle once more, though I did pick it up at the start of the shave, before it disappeared into the background. Another very good shave.

The plastic tub or tube has become ubiquitous as a container for soaps and creams, which is fine, they do the job, but the ceramic bowl this comes in does add a touch of class. Not to mention looking fantastic (I love the styling).

It was a dream to lather, no matter what I tried I always got plenty of thick, cushioning suds that provided an excellent shave. Slickness was never a problem and I got excellent glide. The only niggle was a slight dryness in post shave feel.

The fragrance is subtle but insistent. I liked it. I can see where the ‘tobacco’ description comes in, but it’s actually nothing like real tobacco, which is normally quite fruity. Think instead of a quality soap scent, slightly smoky but clean.

To start with the scent filled the bathroom when I removed the lid, but it seems to have mellowed, so I wouldn’t say it was one for those who want their soaps to pack a punch.

I’d avoided this in the early days as I considered it expensive, but even in the bowl it can be had for well under £15, less still for a refill without the bowl. So it’s not the cheapest, but you do get a quality container in the price (no plastic here).

I really enjoyed using the soap and I’m very willing to give it top marks, I really do rank it among the best I have used.
