The Real Shaving Co. Sensitive Shave Cream

RSC are behind a lot of shaving products made in the UK, so would their bargain cream be any good?

Used with: Gillette 7 O’clock SharpEdge (1st shave)

I was lucky to grab this during a 50% off sale, so it was even more of a bargain than usual. I face lathered, and it built a nice consistency fairly quickly, but took a bit of time to get the volume. My face wasn’t too slick after the first pass. Having said that, I didn’t get any irritation or nicks. It wasn’t the smoothest shave I’ve had though, with my whole face not as close as it has been with other product combos. The smell wasn’t unpleasant, but neither was it a fragrance you wanted to linger. If I’m honest, it smelt like a sports shower gel.

Used with: Personna Super ‘Med Prep’ (1st shave)

I didn’t seem to get the conistency or quantity I wanted, but it covered my face and the end result was nice and smooth. I did end up with a nick on my neck, and the blade felt more like it was scraping the hair out on the ATG pass.

Used with: Feather (5th shave)

I didn’t use too much, so wasn’t sure I’d have enough for my second pass, but with a bit of work I had a good covering both times. I face lathered, having shaken my brush out. Still not too keen on the smell, but it offered enough lubrication to let the blade glide, despite its age. I don’t remember it being particularly slick when washing off after each pass. I did pick up a couple of significant nicks, probably from trying too hard, and some irritation on my top lip. Not a bad finish all-in-all, but could have been better ATG.

Used with: Rapira Super Stainless (2nd shave)

I struggled to get a good coating for my second pass (despite this being concentrated, it needs at least as much cream as anything else I’ve used). I felt the difference, with the ATG pass harsher than the first. Not much in the way of nicks though. The finish was patchy, with some very good spots, and some average.

Used with: Bolzano Superinox (2nd shave)

Producing a good lather for each pass was easier this time, and they both left a good level of slickness behind (a bit less on the second pass). The blade tugged a little on the first pass, and scraped on my neck during the second. I picked up more than a few nicks, though none serious enough to last past the cold water wash down, and some irritation on my neck. It wasn’t the closest or most uniform shave I’ve had.

I wasn’t impressed after the first couple of uses, which is probably unfair for something that cost so little. It fell out of my rotation for a while, but when I finally re-introduced it, it wasn’t as bad as I’d thought. Doesn’t seem to offer the same amount of glide as more expensive alternatives, but a bargain for the money. Not keen on the scent though, and not something I’d reach for over many of the others in my collection.
