Voskhod Teflon Blades

Voskhod Teflon

Another blade from the Russian stable. The name seems to come from their space programme.

1st blade > 1st shave
Mitchell’s Wool Fat

The first pass was nice and smooth, leaving a closer-than-usual finish. When I turned ATG it started to feel much rougher, and I ended up with so many nicks around my mouth it looked like a warzone. The end result wasn’t bad, but it was fairly patchy and wasn’t as smooth ATG as some.

1st blade > 2nd shave
Groomed Shave Cream

Again, the first pass was fine, and even the second didn’t feel too bad. I ended up with several nicks, though fewer than the previous shave, and some irritation on my top lip. In places, the end result was BBS, but it was patchy, with most of my face not as close as that.

2nd blade > 1st shave
Truefitt & Hill 1805 shave cream

The first few strokes felt a little rough, but a nice lather soon smoothed it out and I didn’t pick up a single nick. I was quite surprised at how little touching up I had to do too, which suggests this is a sharp blade. There was the odd patch, as with any shave, but it was mainly soft and smooth, but didn’t quite make it to BBS in the best places. That said, a very good shave.

2nd blade > 2nd shave
Edwin Jagger Sandalwood Soap

Once again, the soap failed to deliver a good performance. It lathered fine, but I had to reload to get enough for a second pass, and it lacked slickness. That may account for the numerous nicks I picked up, and the dryness/irritation caused to my top lip. I also had to do a fair bit of touching up. Worth it though, with a smooth finish, BBS in places, and more consistent than most shaves too (fewer rough patches). Even then corners of my mouth were clear. Great shave.

2nd blade > 3rd shave
Omega Shaving Cream

The blade felt fine on my first pass (WTG), but was clawing on the second (ATG). The number of nicks I picked up seemed to reflect that, though only a few survived the cold water. I also had irritation on my top lip. The lather for the second pass was a bit thin, which probably didn’t help. A bit less touching up required than the previous shave. The end result was smooth and soft, and pretty even across my face and neck too. Not quite BBS though. A good shave, if not the most comfortable.

2nd blade > 4th shave
Taylor of Old Bond Street Jermyn Street Collection Shaving Cream

A good lather as usual with TOBS, so no excuses on that front. The first pass felt fine, but when I switched to ATG my face was hacked to pieces. I had several weepers, one that was more of a river. In fact, it was so bad I didn’t finish my usual touching up. My top lip felt on fire, even after balm. The end result was reasonably smooth, but patchy as I didn’t get a chance to go over some areas. Most of the nicks were sealed by my post-shave shower, but the biggest left a scab, that’s how bad it was. Not a good experience.

Verdict

I experienced highs and lows with this blade. Initially it gave a great performance, but after a couple of shaves it deteriorated in a big way, and the final shave left me scarred, mentally, and almost physically. You can pick them up cheap, so you could afford to throw them away sooner than some, and when they’re working they work very well, but I still count the longevity against them.
