Wet Shaving Products Ol' Kentucky Formula T Shaving Soap

Another from the US artisan, this time their tallow formula.

Used with: Rapira Super Stainless (3rd use)

I scooped, or rather prised, some out of the tin and put it into a container that made it easier to load. I wet the sample briefly before loading with my badger brush. Lather quantity wasn’t a problem, but I did need to add some water to get the right consistency and help with the second pass. Slickness was pretty good and I didn’t pick up any nicks. My neck wasn’t bad, not especially close but the only real roughness came in the usual places. My face was smooth WTG. ATG was good too, though I had some resistance on my cheeks. This was balanced by some BBS areas on my chin. Post shave feel was nice and soft. The fragrance is very nice and stayed with me throughout, but lessened as I went on. It’s a much lighter, less heady, scent than the previous one I trialed. I would have said vanilla although that’s not listed as part of it. A good shave.

Used with: Super-Max Stainless (1st use)

I sloshed some water over the surface for a couple of seconds before loading for thirty seconds using my boar brush. I had to dip my bristles for the first and second passes to help build it to the right consistency. The amount of lather was fine, slickness wasn’t so great. It was rather ‘sticky’ and provided almost no glide, even with water. That said, I didn’t pick up any nicks. My neck was okay. It didn’t feel very close but the only areas of roughness were in the usual trouble spots. WTG my face was fine. There was plenty of resistance ATG, both on my cheeks and top lip. Post shave feel was pretty good, though a touch dry. The fragrance was strong and stayed with me throughout the shave. An average shave.

Used with: Personna Platinum Chrome (2nd use)

I used my boar brush to load from the dry sample for thirty seconds. It took about eight before lather began to explode off it. It needed some water to help build for the second pass but I had plenty for my routine. Slickness felt very good and I didn’t pick up any nicks. My neck didn’t feel especially close but the only roughness was in the usual trouble-spots (a patch low down and along my jawline). Nice and smooth WTG on my face. No significant resistance ATG, but nowhere made it to BBS either. Post shave feel was soft but a bit dry. I got a good whiff of the fragrance at the start but I don’t remember it much after that. This fragrance isn’t quite a punchy as the previous one I trialed. A very good shave though.

Used with: Bolzano Superinox (1st use)

I opted for my new synthetic brush, loading from the dry soap. Thirty seconds provided me with a ton of lather but I did have to add some water. Slickness felt good but I did pick up quite a few nicks, though most were sealed by cold water. I shaved much later today and in a bit of a rush, I have also had a wet shave every day for the last couple of weeks, which is unusual. I say that as it may explain some of the nicks. The only significant roughness on my neck was along my jawline, the rest was pretty good. WTG my face was smooth. ATG was good too, though I did have some resistance. There was a small patch on the extreme edge of my top lip that was particularly bad, but everywhere else had minimal resistance. Post shave feel was good, nice and soft, but a touch dry. The fragrance barely registered this time, though it was present, just dialed way down. A very good shave.

Used with: Rapira Super Stainless (3rd shave)

I soaked the small sample before loading for thirty seconds using my badger brush. Lather took some effort and wasn’t great, slickness was also pretty poor. I decided to go back to the product and re-loaded before my second pass, which was much better. Slickness improved after I added more product and I didn’t pick up any nicks. Apart from a small area in one of my usual trouble spots, my neck was very good. Even my jawline was better than the norm. Very good WTG. ATG was good too, with only slight resistance and no significant roughness. That said, nowhere made it to BBS either. Post shave feel was nice and soft, but a little dry. The fragrance is subtle but stayed with me throughout. A very good shave.

The review process on this got a little out of whack due to Christmas, but I ran through my usual five shaves.

Named after the famous Ford car, the Formula T range differs from the vegan Rustic range due to added tallow, which also explains the name. I was impressed with their other offering so expected good things.

As with my previous experience, the fragrance got a big tick. Although a much subtler scent (the top note is apparently bourbon, but to me it smells more of vanilla), it was strong enough to stay with me throughout each shave, despite using only a small amount extracted from this travel-/sample-size tin.

The lack of any great quantity may explain the performance, as this formula seems a bit tougher to lather and slickness swung from excellent to poor. Protection likewise.

When it was good it was very good though, offering solid post shave feel and fine results. It offer pretty good value too, amplified for those living in the US.

So not quite as good as the vegan formula for me, which goes against most people’s views that tallow soaps are better, but there we are.
