Wickham 1912 Cashmere Shaving Soap

A new range of vegetal soaps from this British artisan.

Used with: Rapira Platinum Lux (3rd shave)

I pressed the sample into a container and loaded from it dry for thirty seconds using my synthetic brush. I had plenty of suds and was able to work up a good lather, with plenty for my usual routine. Slickness was excellent and I didn’t pick up any nicks. My neck was generally pretty close but I did have a small amount of roughness in my usual trouble-spots. No such problems WTG on my face, which was nice and smooth. ATG was good too, with minimal resistance. A couple of places even made it to BBS. Post shave feel was top drawer, though maybe a little dry. Despite being very laid back, I was able to pick up the fragrance throughout the shave, although I sometimes had to hunt for it. It’s pleasant. Overall a great shave.

Used with: The Bluebeards Revenge blades (2nd shave)

I loaded for thirty seconds from the dry sample using my boar brush. I was able to get a good lather for the first pass but it felt like I was eking it out for the subsequent passes. I did have enough to complete though. Slickness was average but I only picked up a single nick. I had a bit of roughness in the usual trouble-spots, especially my jawline, but otherwise my neck was good. My face was nice and smooth WTG. ATG I had some resistance, bordering on roughness on one of my cheeks. Post shave feel was soft but a little dry. I did pick up the fragrance throughout, although it’s subtle so I had to be aware. A good shave.

Used with: Rapira Swedish Supersteel (2nd shave)

I soaked the sample alongside my badger brush for a few minutes before loading for thirty seconds. No problem producing lather, though I did have to work it for subsequent passes. Slickness felt pretty average and I didn’t pick up any nicks. The finish on my neck was very good, albeit with roughness in my usual problem areas. Nice and smooth WTG on my face. ATG wasn’t bad either. There was some resistance but no roughness and a couple of areas went close to BBS. Post shave feel was soft but dry. I picked up a fragrance initially but don’t recall it after that. It’s subtle enough it likely didn’t register. A very good shave.

Used with: Croma Diamant Stainless (1st shave)

I left the sample dry and loaded my synthetic brush for thirty seconds. No problems producing plenty of lather, more than enough for my usual routine. Slickness seemed pretty good. I did pick up a few nicks, but I’d had a horror show the day before so likely leftover from that, as was a bit of discomfort on my top lip. I had roughness in the usual places on my neck — despite spending some time targeting them — but otherwise it was pretty good. Nice and smooth WTG on my face. ATG was very good too, with minimal resistance. Post shave feel was very good. I got a whiff of the fragrance throughout, but it’s easy to overlook. A very good shave.

Used with: Personna Platinum (2nd shave)

I soaked the sample in warm water for a while before loading with my synthetic brush for thirty seconds. Slickness was okay but I did pick up a few nicks. A couple survived past cold water. My neck was very good, although I did have some roughness in my usual trouble-spots. No problems WTG on my face. ATG was very good too, with minimal resistance. Post shave feel was soft but a bit dry. I registered the fragrance at the start but don’t remember it thereafter. A very good shave.

Verdict

I was impressed with Wickham’s previous soap — Super Smooth — and so had been keen to try 1912, which is an all-new vegetal formula (i.e. tallow-free). I have a couple of samples and opted for the Cashmere fragrance of the two for my review.

The fragrance combines bergamot, basil, patchouli and oak moss. I have to say it’s very pleasant. A fresh scent, yet warm. It’s very nice, although not the most in-your-face so I found I had to hunt for it.

Performance-wise, I generally had no issues producing plenty of lather, especially with a brush that had good backbone. It also provided pretty good slickness and protection, though didn’t quite make top tier for me.

That said, it resulted in some really good shaves. I’d say this was another hit, just find the fragrance you like and buy it.
