Williams Mug Shaving Soap

An old-school legend that has been around since 1840.

Used with: Voshkod (3rd shave)

I soaked the puck in hot water before loading for thirty seconds with my badger brush. Lather quantity wasn’t a problem, but it remained quite airy throughout, but it didn’t dissipate either. Slickness was very good and I didn’t pick up any nicks. My neck was very smooth compared to normal, with only hints of roughness in a few places, mainly along my jawline. WTG my face was nice and smooth. There was the usual stubble ATG, but the only real resistance was a small patch at the corner of my mouth. Nowhere made it to BBS though. Post shave feel was nice enough, may be a little dry. There’s no fragrance as such, just a soap smell, slightly industrial. A very good shave.

Used with: Bolzano Superinox (1st shave)

I again soaked the puck before loading, this time with my boar brush. Loading wasn’t a problem and neither was producing a lather, although it remained fairly bubbly again. Despite the bubbles, it didn’t dissipate when applied, although it remained quite translucent. Slickness was very good and I didn’t pick up any nicks. My neck wasn’t bad, but not especially close and I had a few rough patches. No problems WTG on my face, nice and smooth. ATG wasn’t bad either with the only roughness on my top lip. Nowhere made it to BBS, but a couple of places went close. Post shave feel was quite dry. I didn’t pick up a scent one way or the other. A very good shave.

Used with: Gillette Nacet (2nd shave)

After blooming the puck, I loaded for thirty seconds with my badger brush. I was able to build a lather easily enough, but it was full of big bubbles. That said, slickness was pretty good and I didn’t pick up any nicks. My neck was fine, quite close, but with a few rough spots. WTG my face was smooth and it was good ATG too, with the only real roughness limited to my top lip. Elsewhere there was little resistance and a couple of places just about made it to BBS. Post shave feel wasn’t bad, quite soft but a little dry. Don’t remember a scent of any kind before or during. Another very good shave.

Used with: Super-Max Blue Diamond (4th shave)

I sprinkled a few drops on the dry puck before loading with my badger brush. Again, lather wasn’t a problem, though it was still a bit airy, not as bad as previously though. Slickness felt okay but I picked up a fair few nicks, not many survived to the end but some did. My neck was pretty good, with the only roughness in the usual spots and more a suggestion than anything else. WTG my face was smooth, ATG was rougher but nothing significant. Nowhere even approached BBS though. Post shave was fine, but nothing to write home about. I didn’t pick up any scent. A good shave.

Used with: Lord Super Stainless (3rd shave)

I didn’t add any water before loading with my shaken out badger brush. No issues producing plenty of lather and it was of a bit better quality this time, though still quite bubbly. It did the job though. Slickness was good and I didn’t pick up any nicks. My neck was pretty good, though there were a couple of rough patches, in the usual places. There was a little roughness on my chin WTG. One of my cheeks wasn’t especially close ATG, but nothing too bad and the rest was fine. Nowhere was close to BBS though. Post shave feel was pleasant. Again, no scent to speak of. A pretty good shave.

I had heard that this was hard to lather, so I started my review cycle with a bit of trepidation. Ironic considering it has a tagline of ‘For a lasting lather’ on the box (of the US version). Interestingly, the Canadian version I have states ‘Famous for its lather’ and states the weight as 49g rather than 50.

As it happens, I didn’t have any issues producing a lather. Adding water to the puck did seem to leave it very airy (it wasn’t great without either), although it didn’t dissipate as most other lathers would. So perhaps better to try lathering dry.

Despite the bubbles, it worked fine though, gave good slickness and adequate protection. Post shave feel was generally okay too. Obviously you’re not buying this for the scent, which is basically non-existent.

I didn’t get any great shaves, but some were very good and most were of a high standard, so no complaints. For the money it’s a bargain, yet delivers a perfectly good shave experience, so well worth picking some up.

If you do fancy trying this, you may may need to get a move on as there’s a suggestion it’s being discontinued.
